Characters on television shows have one job to do for us as the viewers, be that character! We rely on them every week to do that special thing they do, we help them by watching and they repay us with that reliability that they will be who they are. In the case of Friends a lot of the characters have a special thing they do and not just the six main characters. For example, first up we have Joey, we rely on him for every couple of episodes to say, "How you Doin?'" Next we have Rachel, we rely on her to cry and be spoiled every know and again, being the emotional one of the bunch. Gunther wouldn't be very much of an asset to the show if he didn't obsess over Rachel every time she stepped foot into the coffee house. And we rely on Monica to be the clean freak and perfectionist that she is all the time. The show must stay constant or viewers would decrease rapidly. But when we get to Ross we see a bit of confusion trying to find his forte and what he does best, take a look.
You see that its quite ironic that Ross is the most successful in life out of all the characters, but his "things" makes Ross simply Ross and that's why we love him. His two things are not knowing when to shut up, and divorce. Ross is always getting himself into deeper and deeper trouble by babbling on and saying the wrong things, like when he was faced by Rachel's father in season 8 about getting her pregnant in front of his current girlfriend Mona, that was messy! The gang also abuses Ross about his three divorces and nick-name him things like, "Divorco"... I guess you can say that Ross has two things, making him one of the funnier characters on the show.
